How to Obtain LEED Certification
All Professional LEED accreditation is administered through the GBCI and can be achieved on one of three levels:
- Green Associate
- LEED AP with Designate
- LEED Fellow
To achieve accreditation, the individual must demonstrate an understanding of green building techniques by successfully passing the respective exam with a minimum score of 170. These exams are administered by the GBCI. The current list of Professional Credentialing Exam titles offered by GBCI includes the following:
- LEED Green Associates
- LEED AP Building Design + Construction (available September 15, 2009)
- LEED AP Homes
- LEED AP Interior Design + Construction (available September 15, 2009)
- LEED AP Neighborhood Development (available 2010)
- LEED AP Operations + Maintenance
Under LEED 2009, also known as LEED v3, an individual cannot become a LEED AP without first passing the Green Associates (GA) Exam. The LEED AP candidate has the option of taking the GA Exam as a stand-alone exam or taking both exams at the same time. Note that if a candidate takes both exams as one and fails either the GA portion or the LEED AP portion of the exam, the individual will not receive any accreditation from GBCI.
